Description
A U.S. war crimes court at Nurnberg hears the final plea of the defendant Herman Schmitz, on of 23 I.G. Farben officials indicted over a year ago by the United States on war crimes charges. Schmitz who held one of the highest positions in the vast chemical combine as Chairman of the Managing Board of Directors, concluded his defense with the statement, "My conscience is clear and I feel free from any fault". The Tribunal recesses after hearing the last pleas of the defendants to judge the government's case that has charged these industrialists with giving unestimable amount of aid in building Hitler's war machines that brought only death and destruction to the countries of Europe. - Photo 11 June 1948 -
